In recent years, Google has emphasized the importance of website load time and its impact on website ranking. To improve your website's speed and take advantage of new browser features, try implementing the following tips.
A
fast website not only provides a better user experience but can also increase
conversion rates and improve search engine rankings. Google has introduced
three Core Web Vitals metrics to measure user experience and use them as
ranking factors.
To
determine if optimizing Core Web Vitals is necessary, start with Google Search
Console's page experience report to check if any pages on your website are
loading too slowly. This report shows data collected from real users in Chrome
and is used as a ranking signal.
While
Google's real user data can tell you how fast your website is, it may not
provide an analysis explaining why your website is slow. To find out, run a
free website speed test that provides a detailed performance report and
optimization recommendations.
Use
Priority Hints, a new browser feature introduced in 2022, to indicate the
importance of images or resources on the page, particularly when optimizing the
Largest Contentful Paint, one of the Core Web Vitals metrics. By adding the
fetchpriority="high" attribute to the img element responsible for the
Largest Contentful Paint, you can ensure that it's downloaded quickly.
Native
image lazy loading with the loading="lazy" attribute can help to load
images only when they become visible to the user, reducing the time it takes
for the browser to load the image without requiring a JavaScript library.
Render-blocking
resources, such as HTML documents, CSS stylesheets, and JavaScript files, can
slow down page load time. By checking if each resource is necessary and using
the async keyword on the HTML script tag or optimizing requests, you can reduce
the impact of these resources.
Google
has introduced a new metric called Interaction to Next Paint to measure how
quickly your site responds to user input, which is likely to become a Core Web Vital
in the future. Tools like PageSpeed Insights can already show how your website
performs on this metric.
While
one-off site speed tests can identify performance issues, they don't provide an
easy way to track results or confirm optimizations are working. DebugBear
offers continuous website monitoring, and alerts for issues, and makes it easy to
share results with your team. Try DebugBear with a free 14-day trial.
